Nigel Kennedy’s recording of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons with the English Chamber Orchestra was released on 25th September 1989 and went on to become one of the best-selling classical albums of all-time, selling over three million copies around the world. Originally recorded in November 1986 in the Church of St John-at-Hackney, London, it was a recording that would achieve unprecedented public and media attention and change the course of music history. Vivaldi’s work, 12 movements in short three-minute bursts, was tailor-made for commercial radio. It was the first time that commercial pop marketing techniques had been used in the classical world and the first time that Nigel was unleashed on the media.

Though the appellation "Emperor" was not given by the composer himself, this concerto was born during a time of military influence: the Napoleonic Wars. Beethoven began writing the work in 1808 and completed it in 1809 in Vienna, the same year that the city came under siege by Napoleon's army. Due to the composer's then-severely declining hearing, the concerto was premiered by soloist Friedrich Schneider, rather than by Beethoven himself, in 1811.

Rossini: La Cenerentola - Glyndebourne Festival Opera
La Cenerentola is Gioachino Rossini's version of the popular Cinderella story, an exciting mixture of comedy, pathos, coloratura fireworks and masquerade. This Glyndebourne production by John Cox captures perfectly the fairy-tale spirit of the piece, matched by Allen Charles Klein's imaginative scenery, distorted like three-dimensional cut-outs in an old-fashioned story book.

Rossini: Le Comte Ory - Glyndebourne Festival Opera
Rossini's opera is set in a medieval French court at a time when all the menfolk have gone off to join the crusades, leaving the women longing for them. In their absence, the licentious Comte Ory, his page and their followers dress up as nuns to get into the castle and raid both the women and the wine cellars. Rossini's witty comedy of lust and sexual disguise is also a hugely-crafted work, containing several masterly set pieces.
This colourful production for Glyndebourne is directed by Jérôme Savary, the actor and comedian, and artistic director of Le Théâtre Nationale de Chaillot in Paris. Andrew Davis conducts his second Rossini opera at Glyndebourne, following the success of Ermione in 1995.

Rossini: Ermione - Glyndebourne Festival Opera
Recorded at Glyndebourne's superb new opera house, this lavishly praised production of Rossini's forgotten and unusual tragic opera has proved to be an unequivocal success. Based on Racine's Andromaque, this account of the Greek and Trojan love tangle has been set by Graham Vick in the classically-inspired auditorium of an Italian opera house, rather than in ancient Greece. The set designs, with their stricking colours, forms and lighting are as if created escpecially for the small screen.

A magnificent spectacle of stars, scenery and choreography, this version of Verdi's Aïda is remastered from Sam Wanamaker's landmark production. It features monumental performances by Luciano Pavarotti as Radames and Margaret Price in the title role. The tensions which arise from Radames' love for Aida, a slave who is the daughter of the Ethiopian chieftain, Amonasro, and the jealousy this provokes in the daughter in Amneris, daughter of the Egyptian king, are portrayed in some of Verdi's most famous music.
