Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes – Portrait of a Revolution
Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes – Portrait of a Revolution

Delve into the life and career of Sergei Diaghilev in the Portrait of a Revolution podcast series by Jon Tolansky.

A transformative force in music, dance and the visual arts, the Ballets Russes was founded in Paris in 1909 by the visionary impresario Serge Diaghilev. Innovative and flamboyant, he had a genius for bringing together the most brilliant composers, dancers, choreographers, and designers, for nurturing creativity, and for galvanizing audiences. Emblematic of the influence of the Ballets Russes was the 1913 premiere of Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps: it caused a notorious scandal, but it also changed musical history.

Sabine Devieilhe
Sabine Devieilhe

Following studies in cello and musicology, Sabine Devieilhe turned to the voice, counting Jocelyne Chamonin, Martine Surais and Elène Golgevit among her teachers. In 2011 the soprano graduated with First Prize (and the official, unanimous congratulations of the jury) from the Paris Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse. Throughout her studies she was already collaborating with ensembles including Pygmalion and Les Cris de Paris (cond. Geoffroy Jourdain), performing early music through to contemporary works; with Jean-Claude Malgoire, Les Arts florissants, Marc Minkowski and the Musiciens du Louvre, and Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel she began to explore the Baroque repertory from Bach to Rameau, while performances of Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges with the Orchestre National d'Île de France and the Orchestre de Paris brought her to a wider public on stage.

The 2011-12 season saw Devieilhe make her bel canto debut as Amina in La Sonnambula under Jean-Claude Malgoire, who also chose her for the bravura role of La Folie in Rameau's Platée. She was then invited to the Aix-en-Provence Festival singing Serpetta in Mozart's La Finta Giardiniera; her role debut as Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute followed with Lyon National Opera, and for Montpellier Opera the coloratura soprano took on the title role of Lakmé. In 2013 Devieilhe received the Lyric Artist Discovery of the Year award at the 20th Victoires de la Musique; the same year she signed an exclusive recording contract with Erato. She also starred as Constance in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites (Christophe Honoré's production for l'Opéra de Lyon). Major debuts include the Opéra-Comique in Paris (Lakmé), l'Opéra National de Paris (Queen of the Night), and La Monnaie Royal Theatre in Brussels (Euridyce in Gluck's Orphée et Euridyce).

The 2014-15 season sees Devieilhe make role debuts in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande with Malgoire, and as Nanetta in Falstaff at Marseille Opera. She will also enthrall Glyndebourne audiences when she reprises L'Enfant et les Sortilèges. She recently sang at the grand opening gala of the Philharmonie de Paris, while other concert engagements include appearances with the Philharmonia at the Royal Festival in London and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Stockholm. A passionate interpreter of lieder and French mélodies, Devieilhe performs with pianist Anne Le Bozec at the Lyon National Opera and at the Auvers-Sur-Oise Festival, among other recital engagements.

Her first solo album Rameau: le Grand Théâtre de l’Amour with Les Ambassadeurs (November 2013) won her a Diapason d’Or and the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros, as well as being named an Album of the Week on BBC Radio 3.

vision string quartet
vision string quartet

Founded in 2012, the vision string quartet has established itself in the international string quartet scene within a very short time. With their unique ability to "walk" between the classical string quartet repertoire and their own compositions from genres such as folk, pop, rock, funk and minimal music, the four young musicians from Berlin are currently turning the classical concert world upside down.

The quartet's concert formats are innovative and versatile: the string quartet, which also sees itself as a band, plays in classical concert halls such as the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Berlin Philharmonie and Wigmore Hall London, as well as at renowned festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival. Moving away from classical formats, the four musicians experiment with concerts in complete darkness and collaborate with lighting designers to add further creative dimensions to their performances.

Signed exclusively to Warner Classics, the vision string quartet presents original music from a wide variety of genres beyond classical music.

"Bow and bowing arm were raised high in the air, only making physically visible the depth of feeling already embedded in her rounded tones, strong attack and mastery of the singing line. She bewitched within seconds..." (The Times)

Artemis Quartet on Warner Classics
Artemis Quartet on Warner Classics

Artemis Quartet - The Complete Recordings out 31 May 2024. http://w.lnk.to/artemisq

"The Artemis String Quartet makes chamber music spectacular: the quartet's playing is polished and precise but at the same time spontaneous, fresh and explosive as though the music is being improvised on the spot. Even the physical motions involved with the bowing are beautifully choreographed to reflect the mood of the music."

Gautier Capucon
Gautier Capucon

'Gautier Capuçon plays the cello with the control and wisdom of a much older musician. The lightness of his touch and the consistent clarity of his bow strokes
are quite admirable in themselves, but when combined with an
uncanny sweetness of tone in the higher registers they are breathtaking.'
Gramophone

Renaud Capucon
Renaud Capucon

"Renaud Capuçon is one of today's outstanding violinists -- less flashy than some, but a fabulously musical player who is as remarkable a chamber player as he is a concerto soloist," wrote The Guardian in its review of the French violinist's recent Virgin Classics CD of Mozart concertos, describing the disc as "a fine achievement", while the Scottish newspaper The Sunday Herald felt that: "Capuçon's silvery tone and expressive phrasing of the slow movements ... beautifully balance his brisk and exhilarating takes on the allegros and prestos....Don't miss this one." The BBC Music website pointed out that "Capuçon's style, perhaps because of his regular chamber work, is natural, understated and perceptive; the sound of a musician happily relaxed in his skin and not feeling the need to prove any virtuosic credentials. His performance here is lithe, graceful and refined, capturing vivacious humour with luminous upper-stringed sparkle, and colouring the slower movements with warm, musical poetry."

Joyce DiDonato
