A Take Away Show with @busrakayikci - Shot at Studio Zambelli, Palais Garnier - January 2024
Büşra had reached out to us during the lockdown. She lived in Turkey and offered to play piano for our Stay Away Shows. Minimalist yet heady, her music - precise - had left its mark during that one evening through people’s screens. The video got shared, word got around, she signed with a label and reached out again. Would we like to make another film? Of course we would.
Just for her, we slipped into a rehearsal room at the Opéra Garnier. She took care of the room’s study piano as if it were her own. She surrounded it with her machines, then strapped the hammers to soften their sound. Büşra was discreet, but carried herself with such confidence and mastery that each take was shrouded in sublime majesty. This music, this musician, in this place, it all seemed timeless.

I wrote the song when I dreamt of being by the sea at the beginning of the lockdown, because that was my daily routine. And I felt the absence of water so deeply. Because the feeling of eternity that I get when I look at the horizon and watch the movement of the water is a great source of inspiration for me. When I watch the sea, I often think about how big the world we see is, like the land we live on. I find the contrast between these two forms of life, above and below the sea, very interesting. It makes me think about how harmoniously these two completely different forms of life exist together despite all the contradictions. - Büşra Kayikci

The German term 'Fernweh' expresses an irresistible desire and longing for distant places.
Almost my entire new album, and also this piece, was written and produced during the pandemic. It’s supposed to describe my intense and deep longing for going to the beach and watching the sea – that’s one of my most important sources of inspiration, it gives me a feeling of eternity.
Like most of us, I spent the entire quarantine period at home (our house is unfortunately far away from the beach), and there was only me and my daughter. So she became the only witness of the writing and recording process, she was the first one who listened to the new music.
So often I'm amazed how the cheerful spirit of a child is motivating and inspiring parents to continue, against all odds. Thank you, Menesse!

Almanca bir kelime olan 'Fernweh', uzak yerlere duyulan karşı konulmaz bir arzu ve özlem hissini ifade ediyor. Bu parça ve yeni albümümün neredeyse tamamı pandemi döneminde yazıldı. Fernweh, deniz kenarında geçirdiğim vakitlere dair duyduğum yoğun ve derin özlemimi ifade ediyor. Denizi seyretmek benim en önemli ilham kaynaklarımdan biridir ve bana sonsuzluk hissi verir. Fakat elbette pek çoğunuz gibi ben de karantina sürecini evde kızımla beraber geçirdim ve maalesef evimiz sahile çok uzaktı. Öte yandan kızım da bu dönemde ortaya çıkan tüm çalışmalarımın ve yazma süreçlerimin ilk şahidi, ilk dinleyicisi oldu.
Bir çocuğun neşe saçan ruhunun, tüm olumsuzluklara rağmen ebeveynlerini ayakta tutabiliyor olması beni hep çok etkilemiştir. Teşekkürler Menesse!

Tribute To Egyptian Song was originally inspired by a Radiohead song called “Pyramid Song” According to some sources it was at first named as “Egyptian Song” later changed by the band.
This track is one of the most special pieces in the album for me, with light and abstract vocals, jazz motifs, and an organic electronic sound design produced by me. For this track, I made a tool out of metal and wood in contrast with the texture of the pyramids and desert. And I worked on recordings of the sound that emerged from this wood-metal combination to create a texture for my piece. I hope you will like it as much as I did.

I grew up spending my summers in an area full of olive trees on the Aegean coast of Türkiye, a tradition I still keep with my family today. It is a very quiet and deserted area. Every summer, I experience the peace and abundance that olive trees give my heart. These trees live for 500-1000 years; I’ve always watched them with the knowledge that they are carrying a vast memory, like a wise man, and every time I feel a companionship as if they are watching me back. This image has a very important and powerful place in my heart, and it makes me miss them the whole winter. So this piece is an expression of my longing for my olive trees.

Olive Tree' 24 Kasım'da çıkacak olan 'Places' albümümden ikinci tekli çalışmam.
Kendimi bildim bileli tüm yazlarımızı Ege'nin kıyısında zeytin ağaçlarıyla dolu bir bölgede geçiririz. Bulunduğumuz koy oldukça sessiz ve ıssız bir yerde. Buraya dair en çok sevdiğim şey her gün her an zeytin ağaçlarının huzurunu ve bereketini hissedebiliyor olmak. Bir zeytin ağacı en az 500-1000 yıl yaşar. Bu sebeple bence kocaman bir mekan ve zaman hafızasına sahipler. Tıpkı bir bilge gibi. Ne zaman durup onları izlesem, onların da beni izlediğini hissederim. Bu anıların her daim kalbimde çok önemli ve güçlü bir yeri var ve bu da onları bütün kış boyunca özlememe kimi zaman rüyamda görmeme sebep olur. 'olive tree' özünde benim zeytin ağaçlarını izlemeye olan özlemimin bir ifadesi...
Oturup bu ağaçları izlemenin benim damağımda bıraktığı tadı tarif etmem çok zor. Halbuki bakıldığında bir ihtişamı da yoktur. Mütevazi bir ağaçtır. Çınar gibi değildir. Ama meyvesi, faydası çoktur. Bol bol tefekkür etmeye vesile olur. İnsanı adeta bir buğday tohumu gibi, toplayacak, öğütecek, yoğuracak mayalayacak, pişirecek böylesi bir seyr lazımdır. Yoksa nasıl lezzetli olunur?

Je ne vous connais pas. Je ne sais même pas si je peux vous imaginer marcher dans le froid. S’il y a de la neige parfois sous vos pas. Je ne sais pas dans quelle ville cette scène aurait lieu. Je ne sais pas si vous vous asseyez sur des pelouses aux beaux jours avec des amis, près d’une piscine municipale abandonnée. Je ne sais pas le visage de vos amis. Si vous aimez qu’ils soient beaux, qu’ils pleurent facilement, qu’ils s’enflamment pour n’importe quoi, qu’ils offrent des cadeaux inutiles.
Je ne sais pas si vous aimez quelqu’un. Une fille, un garçon.
S’il y a une histoire qui dure depuis toujours, vous vous êtes rencontrés vous aviez 17 ans et aujourd’hui c’est compliqué.
Si vous vous êtes ensemble depuis février dernier, que tout se passe bien mais que c’est trop tôt pour en parler.
Je ne sais pas si vous vivez seule. Comme on va de la cuisine jusqu’à la chambre. Je ne sais pas s’il y a des rideaux qui laissent passer la lumière le matin et vous vous réveillez comme ça.
Je ne sais pas si on entend le bruit de la rue, s’il y a des livres posés par terre à côté du lit. Je sais seulement la chaise rouge devant le piano.
Je sais certaines choses qui s’affichent de vous et le reste il faut deviner. Je sais comment vous jouez du piano, j’essaye de vous apprendre un peu de cette façon-là, mais souvent on se trompe sur ces choses-là. Je ne sais pas lire votre langue. J’appuie sur « traduction » pour comprendre les légendes. Sans doute je prononce mal votre prénom. Je ne sais pas avec quels gestes vous accrochez le foulard autour de votre visage. Si c’est un geste que vous aimez faire, qu’il faut refaire plusieurs fois par jour. Je ne sais pas comment vous choisissez le tissu, s’il y a une boutique où vous aimez aller pour les acheter ces foulards. Mais peut-être ça ne passe pas du tout comme ça, je ne sais pas.

Carlos Cipa – Between two strangers (Official Music Video)

Carlos Cipa about the track: "The piece presents a very classical harmony: it is in G minor, with the sub-dominant C minor and the major dominant D major acting as opposing protagonists. The delightful dualism that arises between these two chords is as if two strangers were engaging in a lively negotiation. No chord we hear is in root position, instead always in the first or second inversion, which creates a harmonic limbo. There is also no classical resolution of the harmony: it remains constantly in this mode of negotiation; the conversation of the protagonists remains unresolved, so to speak."
Based on Cipa’s wish to leave room for the listeners own perception Daily Dialogue created a dynamic yet personal artwork for the album. The album’s artistic concept should not demonstrate one translation, rather than pushing one owns interpretation of the music. Therefore an AI software was used to generate an endless pool of imagery that is sourced from inspirational images, microscopic photographs of the piano, documentation of the recording process and actual sheet music.

Carlos Cipa – Circulate (Official Music Video)
"Circulate" by Carlos Cipa is a sparse piece with somber undertones that captures the ambience of the evening. Add the piece to your listening library on digital platforms: https://w.lnk.to/cirLY
On a circulating four-chord progression, a very sensitive and beautiful melody evolves and takes shape over the course of the piece. The ambiguity of the piece originates in the nature of the chords: we never hear the chords in root position but always in their first inversion which gives the chords an uneasiness and never lets them resolve.
In March 2022, Carlos Cipa visited the famous piano manufacturing workshop Klangmanufaktur in Hamburg to play and record on one of their incredibly beautiful instruments. They collect old and worn out sometimes unplayable Steinway grand pianos and completely restore them to turn them into perfect concert instruments.
Excited about discovering these idiosyncratic instruments, Carlos decided to record in the workshop on KM133, a recently restored Steinway C grand piano built in 1925.

Sampling the second movement of Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major, Carlos alters the mode of the melody and reharmonizes the iconic polyrhythmic accompaniment figure. The piece was recorded on a historic PH Pianette equipped with a piece of cloth, to add a touch of gentleness to the tone.

Carlos Cipa – Pagoda (Debussy redesigned)
Pianist-composer Carlos Cipa performs his own creative transformation of "Pagodes" by Claude Debussy in this new recording from his Redesigns Project. Discover here: https://w.lnk.to/pdrLY
The composition takes motives from Debussy's original work, preserving melody lines and the basic harmonic idea but adding a new dense yet delicate pattern-like middle ground, which sometimes bursts out to the treble and brings out an almost virtuosic aspect of Carlos's playing and composing, something he usually refuses to do. A small melody that only appears two times in the Debussy original quietly evolves into a kind of chorus of the new composition, a forte climax that breaks upon the listener. This piece was recorded on a recently manufactured PH bow grand, a very light and soft grand piano.

In this version of "I wanted you to know", Carlos Cipa exchanges the satiny sound of his first instrument for the brighter, clearer sound of a Steingraeber grand piano. Listen to this piece here on digital platforms: https://w.lnk.to/wytkLY
Originally recorded on Cipa's go-to piano, his Yamaha Upright from 1981, this is the first rendition of the piece on a grand piano. Exchanging the satiny and soft atmosphere of the upright for a more brilliant and clear sound of the Steingräber grand piano, this brings out a very different quality in the piece. The minimalistic, repetitive and song-like structure is reminiscent of thoughts circling in the mind until they are finally shared with the person they are destined for.

CARLOS CIPA - ARKATA (Munich Session)
The second song of Carlos Cipa's Munich Session recreates „Arkata“, a very freely played piano song on the edge of being too quiet to hear the circular figure the piece is based on. At moments, a subtle melody bursts out of the cloudy patterns and causes slight shifts in rhythm and mood.
»arkata« highlights Carlos’ idiosyncratic style as a pianist and composer. His playing is gentle and humble, imbuing the music with both a subtle melancholy and graceful poise – minimal means achieve maximum effect.

The current events weigh heavily on all of us and occupy a lot of space in our minds – but still I think I've never come this close to actually reflect about these strange times in my music till now. This feeling of us standing in a vast void, each on their own and still there's something that connects us. Oscillating between two poles; being a part of something bigger or acting exclusively for ourselves. NOX tries to convey this scepticism about what actually remains of this solitude on our subconscious, the remnants of being thrown back on ourselves for a little too long.

On Mati:
"I composed it in the aftermath of the tragic fire of 24 July 2018 that engulfed the tiny seaside village of Mati, in the Athens region, claiming so many lives, including whole families. The piece was initially written for the piano but I wasn’t happy with it. Another voice was needed. I approached Thanasis Polykandriotis who came on board to combine the sound of the bouzouki with that of the keyboard. The bouzouki is a folk instrument that fell out of favour for a long time in Greece before gaining the recognition it now enjoys. A type of lute with a very refined sound, its plucked notes contrast with, as well as complement, the sound of the piano’s hammered notes. Although Mati may seem somewhat detached from the other pieces on the album, it blends perfectly with the feelings I wanted to express overall." – Alain Lefèvre

Originally written for his sophomore record »All your life you walk«, this piece creates a dense, polyrhythmic pattern structure that serves as a harmonic foundation to support a strong, song-like melody that evolves over the course of the music. It is one of the few older compositions that Carlos is still playing to this day.

The Tree of Light / A Call To Arms, the first track of the album, is a call to humanity about what we have become and what we can become, on high alert for our survival as a species due to climate change and advancing towards the quest of happiness, wisdom and peace.
The album title, Tree of Light serves as a concept of progressing to the 5th density, the density of light or wisdom, through the 4th density, which is the density of love and understanding. These densities are similar to the keys of a piano, from the 1st to the 7th and the 8th density is the next octave, and so on – The Tree of Light is powered by the music and acts as a catalyst for evolution.

Correlations (on 11 pianos) is, as its title reveals, recorded on nearly a dozen different instruments. Following his previous album Retronyms, which he describes as "dedicated to the idea of creating my own sound world", Correlations marks a return to his roots, in a sense. "I wanted to simplify the process," he says, "by focusing again on the piano, but spreading the concept."

Martin Kohlstedt live at home 2019
I decided for an improvised session caught on video at home in my apartment because this is the place where, between travels and concerts, all thoughts and memories flow together and want to be put in order. In contrasting unity of Day and Night ideas from my past as well as my album “Ströme” that was recorded in this exact space are put into context once again. All of the instruments are recorded live and layered anew in the loop station; the voices of the Gewandhaus choir are disected, sampled and discussed in a new way by means of electronic reproduction. The resulting pieces stay modular and a work in progress as well. This piece is inspired by AMSOMB & KSYCHA from my latest album "Ströme".

”Ströme” is a musical composition commissioned by the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig for Martin Kohlstedt and the Gewandhaus Chor, kindly supported by VNG AG. This composition was created for the project „Two Play To Play“, which is a venture designed by Karen Laube and Matthias Krähenbiel and produced and organized by the Gewandhaus.
