Renaud Capuçon plays Vivaldi: The Four Seasons: Violin Concerto in G minor (Summer): III. Presto
Renaud Capuçon plays Vivaldi: The Four Seasons: Violin Concerto in G minor (Summer): III. Presto

Vivaldi's renowned violin masterpiece The Four Seasons and two remarkable concertos by Chevalier de Saint-George create a fascinating sequence in the recording by Renaud Capuçon and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne. Discover here: https://w.lnk.to/seaLY

The French violinist was in no rush to record The Four Seasons. "For years, I refused to play it. I'd heard it too much in the corridors of the Métro in Paris and as hold music on the phone. But once I'd accepted to play it, I was blown away by the power of the music … I realized that it's famous because it's amazing! It's a masterpiece. I've now played it frequently with Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and it feels fresh and new every time. It's amazingly modern."

Bach: Concerto for 4 pianos BWV 1065 III. Allegro (D. Fray, J. Rouvier, E. Christien, A. Vigoureux)

Speaking of the Concerto for Four Keyboards, David Fray says: “It is vital to achieve the right balance and to create a single sound, not four separate sounds. As pupils of Jacques Rouvier, we were always encouraged to have a distinct personality, but here, while retaining our individuality, we must find a zone where we can all come together … Four sounds that make sense as one sound.” https://wnrcl.me/bachconcertos

'Clair de lune' opens this door wide to transport us to a time where time doesn’t pass. That’s why we become children again when we listen to this music. Artists exploring ideas together become like childhood friends. Alexandre simply closed his eyes and we found each other, on the other side of the door." -Yoann Bourgeois

Fatma Said, Marianne Crebassa – Offenbach: Barcarolle: Belle nuit ô nuit d’amour (Contes d'Hoffmann)

The Barcarolle from Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann spins an enchanting melody for two, here soprano Fatma Said and mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa. Listen to their recording with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and conductor Sascha Goetzel on Fatma Said's album Kaleidoscope: https://w.lnk.to/kalLY

The program presents, in Fatma's words, "a montage of many different songs and arias, each with its own kind of story to tell through a particular style of music – and rhythm." The thread that weaves them together is the theme of dance: "I’ve always felt inspired by the physical and internal movement in dancing – whether with a partner or alone – and for me it represents another way of expressing myself."

Alison Balsom records Telemann: Trumpet Concerto: I. Adagio

"These baroque composers knew the instrument they were writing for," says Alison Balsom. Her album Royal Fireworks captures the joy and solemnity of this dazzling musical era, through trumpet works by Handel, Purcell, Bach, and Telemann. Discover here: https://wce.lnk.to/rfLY

"I’ve been making recordings for almost 20 years and this has been by far the most enjoyable recording experience I’ve had," says Alison. "The music is full of utter joy and magic, the versions we play are often new, and in some cases quite maverick. The thrill of recording with some of the greatest artists around, all of us on Baroque instruments, who happen to also be my good friends, has been a privilege."

Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker: March – Simon Rattle, Berliner Philharmoniker
Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker: March – Simon Rattle, Berliner Philharmoniker

Day 3 🎄 A majestic brass line introduces one of The Nutcracker’s most iconic themes. The children bound in bright steps to the march of the music and perform a dance around the Christmas tree.

The Nutcracker by Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic (Berliner Philharmoniker) remains one of the most iconic recordings of Tchaikovsky’s beloved "fairy ballet". Long after its premiere on December 18, 1892, the Romantic-Era masterpiece has become a staple of the Christmas season in both its original ballet and orchestral forms. Listen to the full album here: https://wce.lnk.to/ntc

Many of its numbers have become world-famous themes, especially prominent in classical music performances and pop culture around the holidays: from the extraordinary opening Miniature Overture to the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Waltz of the Flowers, Dance of the Reed Flutes, March from Act I, and Trepak (Russian Dance). Conductor Sir Simon Rattle calls The Nutcracker “one of the great miracles in music.”

Die 12 Cellisten der Berliner Philharmoniker - La vie en rose
Die 12 Cellisten der Berliner Philharmoniker - La vie en rose

The long-awaited new disc from the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker takes us on a journey of discovery through the musical landscape of France. Music spanning the best part of a century and covering several genres, leaving us with "an inimitably French scent of nostalgia."

"We have long wanted to make a CD purely of French music, France produced many of the greatest cellists, including Pierre Fournier, Maurice Gendron and Paul Tortelier. In fact, the ensemble came into being some 35 years ago, when Jean Français wrote his Aubade especially for the 12 Cellists. When we were looking for music for our new CD, we found lots of pieces that - even if they hadn't been originally written for our instrumental combination - were wonderfully suited to the sound of 12 cellos."

Augustin Hadelich – Dvořák: Humoresque No. 7 in G-Flat Major (Arr. Kreisler for Violin & Piano)

In the summer of 1894, Dvořák wrote eight Humoresques for piano, one of which was transcribed by violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler in 1906. Augustin Hadelich plays this arrangement with pianist Charles Owen on his album Bohemian Tales. Discover here: https://w.lnk.to/boLY

With Dvořák’s richly melodic violin concerto at the heart of its program, Bohemian Tales explores the music of three Czech composers: Dvořák, Janáček, and Josef Suk. Augustin is joined for the concerto by Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

Debussy: Arabesque No. 1 in E major (Alain Lefèvre)
Debussy: Arabesque No. 1 in E major (Alain Lefèvre)

French-born Canadian pianist Alain Lefèvre makes his Warner Classics debut with My Paris Years, a collection of classic piano pieces written by some of the most beloved French composers: Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, and César Franck. Album available now: https://w.lnk.to/mpyLY

“French literature and art are driven by clarity of thought and a form of elegance,” he declares, a sentiment which carries throughout the music chosen for this album. Every piece channels these very principles into their depiction of a Paris that is, at once, somber yet vivid, peaceful yet full of life, sentimental yet carefree.

Bach: Concerto for 2 pianos, BWV 1062: II. Largo ma non tanto (David Fray & Audrey Vigoureux)
Bach: Concerto for 2 pianos, BWV 1062: II. Largo ma non tanto (David Fray & Audrey Vigoureux)

Pianists David Fray and Audrey Vigoureux perform the gloriously serene central movement of Bach’s Concerto for two keyboards in C minor BWV 1062, a work based on the familiar concerto for two violins. https://wnrcl.me/bachconcertos

“A joy for both players and listener,” is how David Fray describes Bach’s concertos for two, three and four keyboards. Five of them appear on a new album, released on November 16th, 2018. “It’s a musical family affair,” says Fray: like Audrey Vigoureux and Emmanuel Christien, he studied with Jacques Rouvier at the Paris Conservatoire, and all four pianists participated in the recording sessions in the beautiful Carmelite Chapel in Toulouse.

Gautier Capuçon and Yuja Wang perform Chopin: Cello Sonata in G Minor: III. Largo
Gautier Capuçon and Yuja Wang perform Chopin: Cello Sonata in G Minor: III. Largo

Following their spring 2019 tour across North America (described by the Toronto Star as "finesse and fire from a starry musical duo"), soloists Gautier Capuçon and Yuja Wang unite for a riveting album of Franck and Chopin. Discover: https://wce.lnk.to/fcLY

The program is composed of two works by Chopin, his Sonata in A Major and his Polonaise brillante in C Major, and Franck’s Sonata in A Major, a transcription by the 19th century cellist Jules Delsart of the Belgian composer’s glorious violin sonata.

Wrote The Classical Review after their recital in Boston, "Capuçon and Wang share a similar vigor and alert spontaneity that make it seem as if they are finishing each other’s phrases. The French cellist plays with a robust intensity that brings out drama from even the most delicate of works ... Wang proved a subtle and thoughtful partner … It seemed that the two had been playing together for a lifetime."

Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy – Simon Rattle, Berliner Philharmoniker
Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy – Simon Rattle, Berliner Philharmoniker

Day 22 🎄 The much-awaited Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy takes place as The Nutcracker ballet nears its end. The distinctive sounds of the celesta guide fluttering winds and strings as the Sugar Plum Fairy floats across the stage.

Andrew von Oeyen plays J.S. Bach: Siciliano from Flute Sonata No. 2 (arranged by Wilhelm Kempff)

The Siciliano movement of Bach's Flute Sonata No. 2 transports seamlessly to piano in this arrangement by Wilhelm Kempff, played by Andrew von Oeyen. Discover his album of Bach and Beethoven: https://w.lnk.to/bbeLY

The pianist turned to Bach during the difficult period of 2020. "While I had studied many of his keyboard works, I almost never performed them; I was not a specialist. Yet his music was calling, and with a newfound liberty of time to explore repertoire without professional deadlines, I decided to bury my troubles in his contrapuntal canon. While reading through a four-voice fugue I told myself: ‘This is good for the brain and fingers.’ … But I soon realised this was no academic pursuit; the attraction was deeper. Something about this music just seemed to make sense now, when so little else did."

Alexandre Tharaud - J.S. Bach Piano Concerto BWV 1052 (Allegro)
Alexandre Tharaud - J.S. Bach Piano Concerto BWV 1052 (Allegro)

Album available here: http://bit.ly/Bachpianoconcertos
https://www.facebook.com/AlexandreTharaud

Alexandre Tharaud follows his dazzling album of Scarlatti sonatas with another fusion of modern and historically informed performance styles.
Joining him in this new collection of Bach keyboard concertos is the dynamic period-instrument ensemble Les Violons du Roy, under its director Bernard Labadie.
Alexandre Tharaud leads the current generation of pianists who are both reclaiming Baroque keyboard music from harpischordists and integrating historically informed principles into their playing. Exemplifying this fruitful hybrid of modern piano and authentic style is Tharaud's collaboration in five Bach concertos with one of North America's most dynamic period-instrument ensembles, the Quebec-based Les Violons du Roy under its director Bernard Labadie.

The programme comprises four concertos for solo keyboard (1052, 1054, 1056, 1058) and also the concerto for four pianos, BWV 1065, in which -- thanks to studio technology -- Tharaud plays all four solo parts.

Alexandre Tharaud – Schubert: Impromptu No. 3 in G♭ major (Andante)

For his first Erato album dedicated to Schubert, pianist Alexandre Tharaud has recorded the four Impromptus, the Six Moments Musicaux and, in his own transcription for piano, four excerpts from the stage music for Rosamunde. Discover here: https://w.lnk.to/atsLY

When Alexandre performed the Impromptus at London’s Wigmore Hall in 2014, The Guardian wrote: "Tharaud closed with Schubert's Four Impromptus D899, which he did wonderfully well …He got to the heart of the beauties and abysses of this music. The disorientation and the grace of the C Minor Impromptu was marvellously judged, while the snarling left-hand trills that threaten the calm of the G flat Impromptu left a sense of unease that lingered long after its great melody had died away."

Vienna Stories by Anneleen Lenaerts is "a reflection and celebration" of the Belgian harpist's musical home, the glorious and historical city of Vienna. Discover here: https://w.lnk.to/avsLY

Here, she plays the eternal Blue Danube waltz by Johann Strauss II with five string players from the Wiener Philharmoniker, of which she is the principal harpist. The musicians are the orchestra's concertmaster Rainer Honeck, violinist Benjamin Morrison, viola player Gerhard Marschner, cellist Raphael Flieder, and double bass player Michael Bladerer.

On the album, Anneleen Lenaerts explains: "As a reflection and celebration of the journey so far, I have selected pieces from both the operatic and symphonic worlds that are special to me and tell a story about my life in the Wiener Philharmoniker. Whether it’s a memory of the Préludes by Liszt with Riccardo Muti, Smetana’s Má vlast with Daniel Barenboim, Yevgeny Onegin with Andris Nelsons, Der Rosenkavalier with Franz Welser-Möst, or of a New Year’s concert and so many other memorable performances with Mariss Jansons, each occasion has left a special impression on me. This huge source of musical inspiration has shaped me into the harpist I am today."
