Diana Damrau: Strauss - Lied der Frauen

Diana DAMRAU, Strauss: Lieder
Album available here: http://bit.ly/Strauss-Lieder

"This is a performance of transcendent art" proclaimed Opera News on hearing Diana Damrau's interpretation of Strauss' Zerbinetta on her last album, 'Coloraturas'. In this collection of Strauss songs, recorded in the composer's hometown, she is joined by the Munich Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann, the leading German conductor of his generation.
Soprano Diana Damrau, described by The Sunday Times as "the most dazzling star to have emerged from Germany in recent years" was born in Bavaria. The region's capital, Munich, was the birthplace of Richard Strauss, and in March 2009 a programme of the composer's songs was presented at the city's Gasteig Philharmonie, with Damrau accompanied by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under its Chief Conductor, Christian Thielemann.
"Strauss loved female voices," says Damrau, "and he explores some extreme possibilities in these many-layered songs, each with its different point of view. Sensitivity to the words is vital to telling the story of each song, to capturing the rapid changes of mood and all the colours."
Strauss' operatic roles for lyric-coloratura soprano, notably Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), Aithra (Die Aegyptische Helena) and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) have played an important role in Damrau's career.
On the new CD, favourites such as 'Ständchen', 'Wiegenlied', 'Allerseelen', 'Cäcilie' and 'Zueignung' feature alongside more rarely heard numbers, and six tracks recorded under studio conditions now complement the sixteen songs captured live.

Diana Damrau - COLORaturA (opera arias)
More information: http://www.warnerclassics.com/release/3255743,5099951931322/damrau-diana-coloraturas

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. It's impossible to know whether Diana Damrau was born great, but on the evidence of her latest disc of Mozart concert and opera arias, she has — without question — achieved greatness; surely few contemporary lyric coloraturas could handle this program, which ranges from the sprightly to the sublime, with Damrau's firm technical command, unaffected mastery of characterization and beauty of tone ... More, please. Thus was the response of the magazine of New Yorks Metropolitan Opera Guild, Opera News, to German soprano Diana Damraus last recital, Donna. In less effusive, though no less positive mode, the BBC Music Magazines critic stated that I cant remember when I last enjoyed a Mozart recital of this kind so much. Among the accolades for Damraus first Virgin Classics recital, Arie di bravura by Salieri, Mozart and Righini was the highly prestiigious Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik.

After two recitals of 18th-century repertoire, this new collection moves forward to the 19th and 20th centuries, with repertoire ranging from Nicolai and Rossini to Stravinsky and Bernstein, from comedy to tragedy and covering four languages: German, Italian, French and English. It includes Zerbinettas marathon coloaratura aria from Ariadne auf Naxos, one of the operas which spearheaded Damraus international career

Damraus status as an interpreter rather than as a mere virtuoso was further confirmed in the Guardians review of a song recital she gave at Londons Wigmore Hall in November 2008: The German soprano Diana Damrau has become a cult figure of late. It is easy to see why. She is very much a diva, with all the intimations of greatness and excess the word implies. Her artistry is phenomenal yet paradoxical: you could perhaps describe her as the Meryl Streep of classical music, since she achieves a sense of total immersion in her material without ever quite letting you forget the powers of technique, intelligence and calculation that inform her singing.

Lucia di Lammermoor's mad scene, featuring real glass harmonica!
Diana Damrau, “the leading coloratura soprano in the world” in the words of the New York Sun, first sang Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Five years later, for this recording from Munich’s Philharmonie Gasteig, she is joined by two splendid singers from the Mediterranean: tenor Joseph Calleja as her lover Edgardo, and baritone Ludovic Tézier as her brother Enrico. Recorded live in concert in July 2013, this 2-CD set captures Diana Damrau’s first performances of Lucia di Lammermoor in Munich, the capital of her native state of Bavaria.

In her first recital album devoted entirely to Italian opera, soprano Diana Damrau takes the golden age of bel canto, the early 19th century, as the starting point for an exploration of theatrical and musical passion that leads to the high-octane verismo drama of the 1890s. Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini and Leoncavallo are lit up by her coloratura pyrotechnics and dramatic prowess.

Diana Damrau – Strauss: Vier letzte Lieder: No. 2, September (Mariss Jansons, BRSO)

"For me, Strauss is one of the greatest composers," says Diana Damrau. "The way he handles the soprano voice is a joy. And to be able to sing his music with my voice feels like coming home." Discover her album dedicated to his lieder: https://w.lnk.to/rsLY

In the sublime Vier letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs), Diana is joined by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks) and its long-standing Chief Conductor Mariss Jansons. A special poignancy is added to the songs, known as Strauss’s farewell to music and to life, by Jansons’ death on November 30th 2019, aged 76. They were part of the last concert he ever conducted, at Carnegie Hall in New York on 8th November, with Diana and the BRSO.
